Bishop Willie Walsh
Bishop Willie Walsh 6th January 1935 -19th February 2025
Bishop Willie died peacefully in his own home on Wednesday night 19th February in the company of a few close friends and colleagues. He served as a a priest of our Diocese for 66 years, 30 years as a Bishop .
Born in Roscrea, he lived all his priestly life in Ennis as a Teacher in St Flannan’s College, a priest in the Cathedral and Bishop of Killaloe and in retirement for the past 14 years. Cinealtas Christ was his episcopal motto, the Gentleness of Christ, which he lived out every day in his care and respect of people. His love of hurling was a blessing in his life as it engaged him with so many people of all ages. He was a national leader for the Church during one of its most difficult times in history when he showed and preached the compassion of Christ by acknowledging the wrongs and abuse committed by those who were not faithful to Christ. On Monday last he was laid to rest in the grounds of the Cathedral after 90 years of a life well lived.
May his gentle soul rest in peace and may his life inspire us to follow his example
